Hi list, I think that is the most succinct title I could come up with. I installed 9.2 on a laptop that previously had gentoo and 9.1 on it in recent weeks. With 9.2 the boot up takes an extraordinary long time - 4.5 minutes at last run. In the boot process this happens where the reiser filesystem checks/log replays occur. Around there you can physically see the slow down, as the scrolling of the screen becomes "jerky". I used the nifty bootchart to build a picture of what was going on, and the culprit appears to be hwscand. Strangely even disabling the hwscan init script, still allows this to run. Damned if I can see what is starting this process. However from the chart I can see that this bar is huge, constantly uses big gobs of CPU. The disks hardly look to get hit. For what it's worth this is a Compaq Presario 700 series (712AU I think). I've checked through the dmesg output and the /var/log/messages file, and nothing looks suspicious as far as I can see. Can anyone tell me how hwscand is started, and possibly even why it's pegging out the CPU for over 3 minutes? TIA -- Steve Boddy
