amanda - it's free and reliable and on the SuSE discs.
Okay, fired up yast and selected amanda. To resolve dependencies it tells me to install the samba client? A bit strange but I'll give it a try anyway. Some years ago I tested taper which was very easy to configure and use, but not very reliable. It seemed to have poor performance and consumed a lot of memory as well, making it prone to crash. Does anyone know if the program has matured with time?
That's because AMANDA (the 'N' is "Network") is primarily a network backup program. Highly flexible, as I understand, but not really oriented toward very small installations. I sure do wish Danz would port Retrospect to Linux. God, I miss that software. I used it first on the Macintosh, then on Windows and now... Still waiting. Spoiled, and waiting.
