Subject: VS: [SLE] HW Raid diagnostics
I was thinking of md, but I can't get it see any of my drives (dev does not appear to be active/an md device). Should md see hw raids?

No, md is only used by Linux software md's. The Compaq Smart Array controller "lives it's own life" and uses its own diagnostic software. The ordinary Linux tools cannot be used, only software from the controller's vendor, in your case Compaq/HP. Anders.

I did a Suse Professional 9.1 (x86_64) installation on Compaq Proliant ML350G4 with Smart Array 641 (with Raid1). Every bit of hardware was detected successfully, but now I'm looking for a diagnostics tool for Raid. The server is going to be located in server hotel so I can't have everyday look at the console lights that both HDD:s are online, so I have to be able to get this information through programs.
Does anyone have any tools to do this (I don't need anything for configuration, just for diagnostics)? Haven't yet tried if ADU/ACU provided by HP works (there isn't version for Suse Pro).
Have been crawling around the net for this but nothing has been right yet. I'll be buying the SLES if there isn't any other way.
If that's all you really want, just stick this in cron.daily
mdadm --detail /dev/md0 | mail -s Raid_Status cocke@catherders.com (adjust the email address and the /dev for your config)
Or you can get a bit more elaborate - do something like: mdadm --detail /dev/md0 | grep for 'failed' (or whatever, I don't recall how it indicates a failure), and if it's found, then send email, dial a pager, whatever.
This approach has the advantage that it works with any hardware, doesn't need a hardware raid controller, yada, yada.
