Recently I also started using cyrus-imap and am looking for a backup concept. As my server is not heavily used I can afford to shut down cyrus for the duration of the backup, but I will probably end up using lvm snapshots for the backup to avoid the downtime.
Here's the link to the backup recommendations of the cyruswiki: http://acs-wiki.andrew.cmu.edu/twiki/bin/view/Cyrus/Backup
The important configuration info of my cyrus server is in a MySQL database, which can be easily backed up without hassle. Other than that, I run a shell script as a daily cron job which simply packs the mail spool into a tar file, and at the beginning of every week it rotates and gzips the tar file from the week before. This makes sure I have an archived copy of my mail messages, which is all I care about. Attributes of the mail messages (like the 'Seen' status) may be lost if I had to recover a server from the archived mail spool, but I prefer such a simple solution without necessity to stop the server. -- Andreas Philipp Noema Ltda.
