Yes, they can, but you need to be careful with the configuration files, and make sure each has its own unique space for logs and the like. You also need to be sure that they both don't try to bind to the same IP address and port (for example, put in another NIC or add a second IP address to an existing NIC, and be sure to use the appropriate settings in httpd.conf to limit each version to its assigned NIC or IP address).

I downloaded the RPM for apache2, and it looks like it uses different directories than 1.x.
