That is a very reasonable answer... to a different question. For *internal* networks that do not HAVE a corresponding real domain (for any of a number of various reasons) that won't work.
hmmm ... I "assume" you are used to using Windows networks, and the "domain" part of Unix just appears to be in the way. Let us assume, you have a network domain ... "yourdomain.net". Where does "yourdomain.net" point to? It would, logically point to the "gateway" to the internet, of "yourdomain". All of your computers, inside "yourdomain.net", would then be "pewter1.yourdomain.net" .. "pewterN.yourdomain.net", irrespective of wether they are on the intranet or the deMilitarized Zone. If you have a network, that has no "internet" gateway, and you don't really mind what sort of topology you use, then you can pick and chose any or no domain. That's my 0,2€ Örn PS. Since the smallest amount is 1€, eventually it will become infinitessimally small.
