Hi, I noticed, when I updated from suse 8.2 to 9.1 last june, that the fonts in WDM (graphical login) were too big, and were clipped. I didn't bother to look it up, not important. It could be because I'm using a smallish display, 1024x768. Then, a few weeks back, I had to install a pair of windows fonts, arial and times - but I did not install the whole set. As I have win Me in anothre partition, I simply copied them over, prety fast. I did not even have to log off, my gnome session picked them up in OO and some other apps. However, balsa lost bold fonts suddenly. When I logged off and on, I noticed that the size of fonts in WDM was smaller, not clipped. The whole gnome session was using smaller fonts. So, having a little idea, I installed the rest of the Arial family. Hey, presto: Balsa had again bold fonts, and WDM looked nicer. How come? Some XWindows applications were set to use windows fonts, Arial family, in preference to Linux native fonts? I can't believe it. The '/etc/X11/xdm/Xresources' file contains this font configuration - no mention of Arial anywere: #define FAMILY helvetica #define SLANT o #if (WIDTH < 800) xlogin*login.failFont: *-FAMILY-bold-SLANT-normal--*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1 xlogin*login.greetFont: *-FAMILY-bold-SLANT-normal--*-140-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1 xlogin*login.promptFont: *-FAMILY-bold-r-normal--*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1 xlogin*login.Font: *-FAMILY-medium-r-normal--*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1 #else xlogin*login.failFont: *-FAMILY-bold-SLANT-normal--*-180-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1 xlogin*login.greetFont: *-FAMILY-bold-SLANT-normal--*-240-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1 xlogin*login.promptFont: *-FAMILY-bold-r-normal--*-180-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1 xlogin*login.Font: *-FAMILY-medium-r-normal--*-180-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1 #endif #undef FAMILY #undef SLANT And the file '/etc/X11/wdm/Defaults/wdmLogin' has this - again, no mention of Arial: SystemFont = "-*-helvetica-medium-r-normal-*-%d-*-*-*-*-*-*-*,-*-*-medium-r-normal-*-%d-*,-*-*-medium-r-normal-*-*-*"; BoldSystemFont = "-*-helvetica-bold-r-normal-*-%d-*-*-*-*-*-*-*,-*-*-bold-r-normal-*-%d-*,-*-*-medium-r-normal-*-*-*"; AntialiasedSystemFont = "-*-sans-medium-r-normal-*-%d-*-*-*-*-*-*-*"; AntialiasedBoldSystemFont = "-*-sans-bold-r-normal-*-%d-*-*-*-*-*-*-*"; Could it be that Arial is the first font found alphabetically? But then, how come the sizing of WDM seems to be designed for Arial - ie, before I installed Arial the lettering was clipped? -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
