I have had this same problem. I had to buy a Linspire notebook to solve the problem. But I am a simple end user, and I can't do any script commands other than "locate" and "cd" and "ls". Heh. I use SuSE 9.1 on two desktop computers and on one Acer notebook. I generally prefer SuSE, but I just couldn't get SuSE to do what I needed it to do. I would have had to hire a Linux expert to tweak my SuSE, and I was concerned that it was a proprietary formatting issue that couldn't be solved without either a) licensing some proprietary formats; or 2) asking a Linux expert to use DeCSS, and since I am an attorney in California, I can't risk violating the wretched DMCA. Linspire was therefore a less expensive alternative. You can get Linspire computers for a decent price here: http://www.sub300.com I suspect that Linspire probably solved this problem by licensing some proprietary formats. I really think that this is one of those times that Microsoft and Disney have you by the short hairs. Unless you live outside the US. And you never plan to travel to the US, where you risk arrest for using DeCSS!
