Hi,
I originally tried to install SuSe 9.1 and Windows XP in the same hard drive (30 GB). But Yast didn't allow me to make the partitions in my drive. Win XP (NFTS) seemed to be occupying the whole disk...
So I gave it a shot with only SuSe 9.1 in that drive for a couple of days (meaning I deleted the XP partition). But SuSe 9.1 gave me too much trouble with my hardware. I had gotten something working just before something else stopped functioning (sound card, video card, camera, printer, scanner...) I use too many hardware applications and I can't be too patient.
I anyways want to give SuSe 9.1 a chance.
Is it possible to install SuSe 9.1 in an external LaCie P2 hard drive that connects to my laptop through a USB cable? I'm thinking of buying such a hard drive, but only if Linux can be installed there. How does the computer boot into Linux then if I have Windows XP still in my main drive? Would this ruin something in Windows?
Which steps should I follow to guarantee that I can switch with no problems between the main and external drive from one OS to the other?
I need a step by step 'HowTo' on this. I don't consider trying to make the two systems share a drive... I have spent hours recovering XP and all of my files... I don't want to do that again!
Thanks.
You should have spent some time looking around this maillist. Recently there was a whole thread about putting suse on with xp. Not a real brain drainer either. 1. resize the xp partition, 2. install linux on the remaining partition, 3. use either via grub bootloader. As to the secondary drive it to will not use very many neurons. 1. plug in the second drive, 2. install linux onto that drive, 3. use either via grub bootloader. Yast will install grub and should set it up to run either OS. All these things are NOT no-brainers, you still gotta read some of the docs/howto's. Look at the SLE archives or go to LinuxQuestions.org and search for xp/suse9.1 RA -- Old age ain't for Sissies!
