First of all, when you're using a vanilla kernel you're not using a distro. Secondly, you might want to take a look at the news section of www.k3b.org. 2.6.8 and 2.6.8.1 introduced a change in the way ATAPI devices are handled. Basically, to get around a security bug, doing things with devices became a root only thing. So you need to start k3b as root, and no, suid or sudo won't help. You really need to log in as root If you're going to be running bleeding edge kernels, you need to be a lot more active in monitoring the linux kernel mailing list and other forums. It is a tricky and volatile thing to do
