Would you think sending the above link to Western Digital? I believe not too late, because a patch inside the Linux kernel can equalize it to Windows. Reading the contents of above link, you see somewhere that WD responded "they do not support Linux". "Not supporting linux" is one of general statements that technical support personnel usually use it because they have not really technical information(!) and sometimes they don't know what they are saying at all! Believe me! After hundreds of contacts to support centres of many different companies, I concluded that discussing inside forums and mailing lists are much more better and helpful. If Western Digital has not been officialy informed about this bug yet, I suggest someone do this.

Yes, but is the problem with WD drives or Mandrake? You may or may not remember not too long ago Mandrake was also killing some cdrom drives as well, of a particular brand. It would seem that Mandrake has a tendency towards not cooperating well with certain drives.
