I'm about to buy a couple of new servers. It looks like they'll use Opterons, with which I have no experience. Am I likely to have any problems running applications? Are there good sites to learn about any practical issues there may be?
I just assembled a new server using dual Opterons on an MSI mainboard with SATA RAID. Using 9.1 I had no trouble with the OS installation at all. It's not in service yet but I have AMD 64s, which is essentially the same chip, in other boxes running without problems. Except of course for that damn CD burner issue which shouldn't be an issue on a server. FWIW I was curious about the new Solaris release so earlier I installed the demo version of Solaris on this server. The Solaris installation GUI choked on this hardware (the board and chips were fine but it's very sensitive to video card choice) and I had to install from the command line. The only desktop choice I could find was a modified Gnome desktop (not my favorite, but still nice). Overall I have to say that the quality, flexability, and ease of use of the SuSE installer is still the best I've ever seen and you don't have to pay extra for all the various server packages. Jeff
