Either NIS (antique, easy to maintain, prone to inexplicable failuers) or LDAP (modern, perhaps steeper learnig curve, "the way of the future") would be a good choice, so you don't have that problem with differing UIDs.

Yes, rpc.ugidd was what I was using with the lib-based rather than kernel-based version of NFS. It certainly would be nice if there were a kernel-based version of it in nfs-utils.
Guess it's time for me to learn about LDAP. Any recommendations on the best docs to start with? Perhaps I'll beat Patrick to it but you could always 'man ldap' or even
