OK, saving the file to a local file location and then opening it restores the formatting, etc. Thanx for the assistance. On Sunday 08 August 2004 21:01, david brenner wrote:

I get a file in MS Word attached to an email, for my editing attention. I snap on the file name, and it comes up on OO, but it comes up read-only, which is not at all helpful. How can I make this file editable?
Some sort of manipulation of stuff on the top header makes this error message come up in a window: ________________________________________________________ OpenOffice.org 1.1.1 X Error loading document file:///tmp/kde doug/kmailPBZccb5/Grossjay.doc: /tmp/kde-doug/kmailPBZccb5/Grossjay.doc does not exist ________________________________________________________
Of course, I am actually looking at the (uneditable) file on the screen behind this message. Of course it exists!
What good is this program if I can't use it?
Is it only good for reading files, not working on them? And there is a big batch of gobbledy-gook at the beginning and at the end, with the text sandwiched in between. (Lots of sharp signs and stuff.)
Have you tried saving it to disk and then opening it?
