You da man, Mark... kinda ;-) I didn't have a ~/.Xmodmap, and "man" didn't know anything about .xmodmap either, so I had to get the info from my RH9 install. "xmodmap -pp" told me my mouse has 7 buttons, though I have no idea where they're hidden. At the end of the day, 'xmodmap -e " pointer = 3 2 1 4 5 6 7" ' did what I needed. I still can't believe the control panel couldn't do this for me. Cheers! julian. ================== On Aug 12, 2004, at 9:07 AM, Mark Gray wrote:

I tried with a USB mouse as well as a dumb wired PS2 mouse, all with the same result. I can't imagine why the left/right buttons are grayed out - all PC compatible mice have at least two buttons.
Anybody else have any clues, please? I know this isn't a particularly glamorous problem, but I could still use the help. I'm not going to become right handed just to use SuSE :-)
If you do not already have a ~/.Xmodmap file, create one and add:
pointer = 1 3 2
(A personal preference for left-handed button order, your own may differ) See man xmodmap
