I am sorry if this problem has been discussed here before, but I have just discovered this list and would like to throw it out for discussion. I have been using SuSE 9.1 on my computer since it came out without any problems. Then, I installed a kernel patch a couple months ago (The one that fixed the vulnerability where a normal user could execute a small C program and crash the kernel). After installing that patch, my network card quit working, and my X server failed to load (I would not get any errors, It would just hang on a black screen). Subsequent patches exhibit the same problem. I have "fixed" this problem by adding "acpi=off" as a boot parameter. I just wanted to make sure this issue was known and being worked on. I could provide hardware specs / kernel messages if needed. Thanks! Kirk Coombs -- visit me at http://www.sparticus.us
