Thank you for your advice. I will ask you to send me the filter if I ever get my Linux system working again. It crashed yesterday. --doug At 08:35 AM 8/16/2004 -0400, BandiPat wrote:

Doug, Both KWord and Abiword will read Wordperfect files. Not always perfectly or with every little bit of formatting in tact, but pretty well. There is also a program available that converts WP files to OO files nicely using the shell/konsole. The program is wpd2sxw and located here: http://libwpd.sourceforge.net/
It works quite well and maintains 99% of the formatting too. Also, have you tried the older WP8 for Linux? You should just need to install some of the old shlibs to work. Those should be on your SuSE CD's.

It sounds like KWord would be on the drive already, but it seems not to be. Where do I look for KWord or Abiword? (I normally get the files in MS Word .doc form, but I can get them in .wpd form if I need to. WordPerfect converts the files fine, then hangs, to where I need to "kill" it.) I used to have the older WP8 for Linux, but I have moved house, and I don't know if I can find it. Unlike some folks on the list, I am not averse to spending money on programs I need, so long as the amount is not ridiculous.
Thanx for your advice.

Doug, The MS Word filter included with WP8 broke a few years ago due to the billion second bug in Unix. Corel never issued a fix and I'm guessing that they haven't yet corrected it in the one they are selling either. From your description of the problem with the files, it would seem the filter was still very much broken.
Another gentleman did create a fix for the older WP8 and it works without problems for .doc files. I'm not sure if his new filter will work with the new WP8 though. I would be happy to send it to you to try.
In another mail you mention trying to work with the file after opening it from your kmail as an attachment. If I am not mistaken, opening an attachment from the mail only opens it in a read-only mode and doesn't allow you to work with it. With something like this, I would suggest you always save the document to disk first, then open with OO. I believe it will work better for you at that point.
