I want to use gdm instead of kdm, and I did as follows:
1. install gdm package. 2. in tty1, I login as root and type: /etc/init.d/xdm stop 2. modify /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager : DISPLAYMANAGER="gdm" 3. type: /etc/init.d/xdm start
What I got is a blue screen with a message saying that there already appears to be X server running display :0......
Then I tried to reboot, but I still got the same blue screen.
So what is the correct procedure ?
My memory might be playing tricks, but I have now just recalled that about a month ago (I think), there was a thread about something similar: being unable to run gdm because an X server was already running. I can't remember the details but it might be worth going back through the archives (if you've got plenty of time to spare!). I have a feeling that it's a gdm problem, but I may well be mistaken. Sorry not to be more precise. David
