It shows up in SuSE as /windows/D/, but it's only writable by root. chmod to add writability for other users claims to succeed, but doesn't do anything. I thought /windows/D/ might be a symlink, but that doesn't seem to be it.

What am I missing? How can this directory be made writable by all users?

Check the entry in fstab. Mine has /dev/hda8 /windows/D vfat rw,users,gid=users,umask=00 02,iocharset=utf8 0 0
