Thanks for all your help. I will give suse 9.0 a shot and hopefully it will be a breeze. I really want a simple partition setup so this sounds like the answer for me.

Actually, I don't know. ISTR that the ability to resize NTFS partitions (which is what XP uses) was introduced in 9.0, but check first. If the installer doesn't recognise the partition type then it won't try to resize it - it will just fail saying that it can't create the necessary partitions because it can't free up the space. FWIW, though, I'd recommend getting hold of 9.1 if you can - it's more recent and a definite improvement over 9.0.
