Picture this: System crashes, CPU board needs to be replaced, can't get original chip set.
I read somewhere of a backup utility that will create a backup and that backup can be placed on a different computer with a different chip set and that different computer will be automatically configured to run the original system
Does anyone have any information on this backup utility?
Are you thinking of Mondo Rescue? If so, check out http://www.microwerks.net/~hugo/. That's meant for to deal with disk crashes, I think.
And unless you've configured your system very narrowly to run on only the hardware present in your now-defunct mainboard, you'll probably have no trouble starting up from the same hard drives with a new board. In fact,
I went through the exact same thing just a few weeks ago, and it it went of without a hitch. The system auto-detected the new mainboard hardware and notified me about it upon the first login, giving me the chance to let it perform whatever system-level reconfiguration it required.
