I've left my previous post in below for archival purposes. Carl - Thanks for posting on this. I really thought I had gone nuts. I've looked at all the permissions I can find, and I just know it has to be something I'm not seeing. This is one of those weird "it worked once and I used YOU and now it didn't". I'm using KDE, so this has to have come from either the recent kernel update or perhaps the latest KDE updates. I have a very plain vanilla system. I don't feel like risking anything on my production box by updating the kernel (SuSE 9.0 with 2.4.21-215-athlon kernel) because being able to listen to Flash noises isn't important compared to having everything work. Hopefully, someone will figure this out or I'll live with it until the next update. ;-) Thanks for posting. Malke

I actually logged in as root and determined that the very same applet gives sound there in Mozilla (animal noises from www.zefrank.com if you're feeling silly). I'm using Mozilla 1.6, standard with the 9.1 install. Running the same Flash animation in Konqueror as user works.
Things I've tried with no success:
1. Updating to latest Flash player from Macromedia's site
2. Adding user to sys group
3. making the group on /dev/snd user instead of root
4. Permissions on /opt/mozilla are already set to Owner:root, Group:users and users can view and modify content.
5. Permissions on .mozilla in my home directory look normal with me as the Owner and Group as users.
It is obvious to me that this must be a permissions issue, but I don't know what else to check. Thanks for any help you can give.
