Before you do this, isn't it a good idea to overwrite the free space on the partition with zeros, to give gzip a better chance to give good compression? With old rubbish laying around, the zip will probably be bigger than it has to be I think Norton Ghost is smart about which disk space is allocated and which isn't, which is why it only works on some file systems
