I checked the log, but it doesn't show an error. In fact, it shows that the mode change to 1280x1024 succeeded, it also shows the change back to 1600x1200 succeeded. Problem is that it the change to 1280x1024 resulted in a 640x480 screen, not a 1280x1024 screen. The entry lines for the 1280x1024 mode look right and the refresh rate number is correct.

I have SuSE 9.1 with an ATI 9700 Pro. Both 2D and 3D work fine. However, I have two problematic behaviors. First, I cannot use 1280x1024 (my flat panel's native resolution). All other resolutions up to 1600x1200 work fine, including 1280x960. When setting the resolution to 1280x1024, it bumps down to 640x480. This is also a problem since the games I like to play cannot seem to change the resolution they work in. Thus, if I have X running at 1280x960 (a resolution not supported in most of the games) and I set the game video setting to 1280x1024 or 1600x1200, it makes the game screen extend off the visible screen. If I set it lower, like to 1024x768, it fills up only part of the visible screen. So, my two questions are:
1. Any idea why 1280x1024 doesn't work but the rest do;
The answer is probably in /var/log/XFree86*.log
I guess the modeline for that resolution is wrong.

Believe that I would check /etc/X11/XF86Config that the parameters for 'monitor' were the same as what was on the cd *.inf file provided with your monitor. I would guess the HorizSync, DisplaySize or VertRefresh was wrong. If that is not it, the Modeline for 1280x1024 is incorrect. Fix that in a console with sax2 from runlevel 3 as root. *If you kan't beet em, join em* -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/photos
