Well, that got rid of the passwordfd error, but it still doesn't work. When started from command line, I see error messages, such as "It was pppd that died" "ppp exited with return value 5" and "Couldn't find interface ppp0: No such device".
"such as"? Nothing before that? 5 Pppd terminated because it was sent a SIGINT, SIGTERM or SIGHUP signal. so something kills pppd for some reason. Try adding "debug" to the peers/kppp file, try connecting, and then see if you can find anything relevant in /var/log/messages. But given that it's something outside pppd that kills it, that probably won't tell you anything. Still, it might...
