Hey Group;
I recently upgraded to a new machine and have had nothing but headaches. It is a ASUS A7N8X-E motherboard with 512 megs. It is a Nvidia based chipset motherboard. I have updated all of the Nvidia driver/modules.
Problems have been 1. Defective new memory - replaced - fixed 2 Printer not found - replaced the complete motherboard - fixed
and now
3. Keyboard locks up now and then - it looks like the CPU.
I did have such a problem with a XP2600+, swapped the A7N8X-E and memory, it turned out to be the CPU. It would run as something like an XP2200+ at 133Mhz, but not at 166Mhz as anything. Now it's running fine with an XP2800+/512M, SuSE 9.1 with kernel.org 2.6.7-mm2 and the forcedeth NIC driver.
I found out yesterday while running the program "racer" which is a mouse drive 3D game with sound the keyboard locked up. The CRT, mouse and sound continued to function properly with the game. However, the keyboard failed. This keyboard has never failed on the older machine
PS/2 type keyboard controller problem?
I have seen in a pure KDE/Mozilla session both the mouse and keyboard lockup. Reboot and everything works again. "memcheck" shows no problem. Proper shutdown is not possible. On bootup, fsck seems to not always find a problem and everything works.
Could it be a acpi, apm problem. I have tuned them off in BIOS and grub.
Any suggestions to tracking this problem?
I found lockups with the bad CPU would happen during bootup in different places, so CPU could be the cause. ACPI is running here without problems, racer, FlightGear, UT2004 all OK. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Hamradio G3VBV and keen Flyer ===== LINUX ONLY USED HERE =====
