Because unicode (utf-8 is just one of several ways to encode unicode) allows to encode all languages, so for instance file names in Japanese, German and Tzech can be displayed correctly (given suitable fonts) at the same time, which is impossible with the ISO encodings that cover only a small part of the languages. No need anymore for switching character encodings depending on the language you want to use. Philipp
