More basically, what would cause the error message on lpinfo? Beyond authentication, it seems there's something more fundamentally wrong with my setup. Knowing what can cause that type of error would help me dig in the right area.

To remind people, here's the error again:

linux1:/etc/cups # lpinfo -v lpinfo: cups-get-devices failed: server-error-operation-not-supported

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Last but not least, you need to set up your printer. Do not use Yast for this. Use the CUPS web interface at http://localhost:631/ . Well, if cups says it cannot do the operation (as quoted), I would restart cups (/usr/sbin/rccups restart) and try again. If it still does not work, I would consider reinstalling cups.

If that does not work, perhaps you need to reconsider the 'Basic' authorization.
