To set the netmask use the following.

ifconfig 192.168.1.5 broadcast 192.168.1.255 netmast 255.255.255.0

Did you do a "rcnetwork restart" after changing the ipaddress in Yast?

Yes, no change. ifconfig still shows subnet mask of 255.255.255.255. Any other thoughts? How does YaST affect things reported by ifconfig? Can I follow the chain of config files to find the problem?
