I am using the e1000 driver for the Intel PRO/1000 on my Dell PowerEdge 400SC. The driver that came with Suse Pro 8.1 froze the machine. For some reason, google isn't working for me right now, but try to google for "wmeler e1000". If that doesn't give you some leads, let me know.
My Intel PRO/1000 was integrated into the motherboard, so I can't suggest a NIC.
Suse 9.0 works out of the box with most (all?) intel Gbit cards. Im quite sure you can also download kernel drivers from intels or dells website. The specific Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop that's being mentioned I don;t think I have used (yet), but we've a dozen desksides/floortopsa and servers running linux with intel Gbit cards, and every new laptop one buys these days comes with Gbt , and suse 9 works like a charm with these. 8.1 and 8.2 had issues with some (all ? cannot remember) of the cards.

I want to go to 1 gig for a backbone connection here in house between two different parts in the building.
if not using this one can you recommend another model that will work.
thanks.
