I don't use emacs, but my System Admin does, and so I have it installed on my 8.2 box.
While looking for "fonts", I noticed:
intlfonts-bdf Mule_UCS
Ah, mule was not installed; after doing so, it doesn't crash... but I can not type the "ñ": I have to insist three or four times pressing the letter "ñ" till it prints something on the screen, which is not "ñ", but "?".
Installing intlfonts-bdf doesn't help, either. It doesn't crash, but I can't type the special Spanish characters. Argh...
Errr, test snipped... I wasn't saying that the rpm's listed above were the ones you need, although I am glad your machine isn't crashing any more, What I suggested is you search on "emacs" in the YaST2 Control Center and see if there are any other rpm's that you need to install.
