Now for #1.
Is FireFox still at the top of the list? (I ass-u-me you are using SUSE 9.0 Pro or so, KDE's Control Center, KDE Components, File Associations.) If it is then you need to edit it and put %u after firefox on the command line. That will load the URL you click on in whatever.
If you put Konqueror back at the top, then you may need to edit it also.
You shouldn't have to create a new user and copy data to get past this issue.

Oddly enough, when one changes the association to firefox from konqueror it breaks konqueror, completely. Unlike the problem I had before, all I had to do was remove firefox and then konqueror would again load a URL. That didn't work, last time, hence the [apparent] necessity to rebuild. The re-association [apparently] is absolute; one cannot choose to use a different browser if one wants to do so, but is stuck w/the new association. Other mime types allow you to right-click & choose another application but apparently that will not work w/html pages. Weird. - -- ...CH Avoid doing business with 'The Link' ISP.
