They didn't abandon it. They simply stopped marketing it. They still sell to corporate customers. For example, since my company does a lot of work for banks, we have a couple of OS/2 systems for working with them. Anyone who wants a solid reliable system stays away from Windows. For that reason, many banks have been using OS/2 for many years and continue to do so. There is also an indepentdent company that remarkets OS/2 to small users. Their product is called eComm Station.
