I use a script called RSYNC to backup my laptop to any of two other
Linux boxes here.
=========================================================================
####rsync -avz --rsh=ssh <local directory>
rsync -avubpoDrz --exclude=/proc --rsh=ssh $1 $2
==================================================
I just issue "RSYNC / barrabas:/data1/SZB50" and it backs it up with
permissions and ownerships intact when I rsync it back to the laptop,
e.g if I build a new distro onto the 10GB HD on the laptop, I rsync it
across to another box, put the 20GB drive in the laptop, boot from a
rescue CD and rsync it back from the remote machine, do a "grub-install
/dev/hda", reboot and I'm up and running. I don't even bother to exclude
/tmp.
Ooops! aplogies for the top posting -- force of habit from the kernel
and other lists, but an irritation on here it seems.
Regards
Sid.

There is an --exclude flag to rsync, so you should be able to eliminate the
/proc system, but I must say I'd favour tar as well.

Gee, thanks :0
I have to say, I do feel CONfident with TAR
