what printers actually work with Linux, Suse 9.0,
For general information follow the rules in http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2000/08/jsmeix_print-einrichten.html and in http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2000/08/jsmeix_print-kompatibel.html To be safe choose a printer which * "understands" a standard printer language * can print plain ASCII text directly (this can be considered almost as a proof that the printer also supports a standard printer language) * is shown as perfectly or full supported both on - Linuxprinting.org - the SUSE hardware database
Canon BJC-2100
http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Canon-BJC-2100 max. 720x360 dpi, works Mostly
I need to know which Epson or HP will actually work, right out of the box.
In this case you need to ask the manufacturer for a guarantee. At the moment only the printer manufacturer HP has a free and open source driver (HPIJS) for Linux - see http://hpinkjet.sourceforge.net/ and in particular see http://hpinkjet.sourceforge.net/productssupported.php The best printout quality result from those printers which belong to the DJ9xxVIP device class. See the detailed device class descriptions which kind of printing modes are supported by which device class: http://hpinkjet.sourceforge.net/printmodedescr.php Regards, Johannes Meixner ----------------------------------------------------------- SUSE LINUX AG, Deutschherrnstr. 15-19 Mail: jsmeix@suse.de 90429 Nuernberg, Germany WWW: http://www.suse.de/ -----------------------------------------------------------
