I downloaded the source, copied the 9.0 kernel source .config across, did a make xconfig - suggest going through it all as keyboard, mouse and VT(missed this one somehow) support have to be selected separately. make clean && make bzImage && make modules && make_modules_install, cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/2.6.0-test9;cp System.map /boot/System.map-2.6.0-test9 cp .config /boot/config-2.6.0-test9 vi /boot/grub/menu.lst
I got the source from /pub/people/kraxel, which had some interesting info, but I have 8.2.
My network didn't start, so "/etc/init.d/network start" was necessary after "modprobe 8139too".
Mine worked fine, but again on 8.2
Alsa modules did not load ... probably need to check /etc/modprobe.conf to see what's there, but manually installed stuff.
2.6test9 comes with ALSA 9.7, which basically means they changed the options for the modules, dropping the snd_ prefix from the options. Modinfo <module> is a real help there.
Just a few rough edges to sort out, but it looks promising. Most things seem to be there and working and I've also answered my own questions regarding modutils and modprobe.conf, looks like SuSE are very close to 2.6 with the 9.0 distro.
Actually, with the updates in kraxel, so is 8.2. I have recompiled it several times, trying to fix an issue with the newer ALSA and my AWE64 sound card. I also noted a need to update hotplug, but I found it to be a heavily patched package that will take quite a bit of time and work. So far mine is working quite well as well. One issue I would ask you, does splash work on yours? I have the graphical grub boot screen, but no console graphics, and splash says it is a skipped service. May be an 8.2 thing. joe@jmorris:~> uname -a Linux jmorris 2.6.0-test9-0-default #3 Sat Nov 8 18:12:54 PHT 2003 i586 unknown unknown GNU/Linux -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 God said, I AM that I AM.
