I currently have 8.2 pro and I'm supposed to get 9.0 pro sometime this week. In the past, I've used the upgrade option, but this time I'm thinking of doing a new install.
Make a full backup first! In other words: do a backup, as full as possible.
My question is if I do a new install, I'm I going to lose all my information in my /home directory?
Depends. If it is on a separate partition, and you tell yast not to format it, then you don't loose it.
What's the benefit of a fresh install vs upgrade?
Well, it cleans house, but you loose all your configurations.
Basically, I have everything working how I want it, so I don't want to screw anything up with a fresh install. I'm talking about firewall, ssh info, web stuff, cups, samba, etc...
Then, try the upgrade. If it fails, start afresh. If it worked, you saved time. If it doesn't, the time lost is minimum compared to the time need to reconfigure everything as it was: looking up in the backup for your files, manually editing the new files, looking up your notes to try to remember how on earth you did this or that... By the way, it is easy to know what configuration files have been updated, and which not. Just look for *.rpmnew and similar files. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
