On another box it seems grub makes no partition active.
How do I make grub correct this error while in linux so that I can multiboot?
You can do it from Yast, but the configuration file is: /boot/grub/menu.lst Entries having a "makeactive" are set active when booting from them - if grub manages the booting, of course. For example: title Windows Me root (hd0,0) makeactive chainloader +1 This boots windows on '/dev/hda1' making the partition active first. If you remove all those lines, grub will not touch the active status - I think O:-)
Can someone send me a copy of their grub multiboot menu? BTW where is this stored?
I'll send you mine offlist.
In creating this havic I find that 8.2 made the extended partition invisable except to *nix when mounted on the other machine. The fix required reinstallation after rebuilding the partitions.
I wonder... hiding partitions is a trick used by partition magic, in order to boot several windows copies, I think. It can be changed using fdisk, I believe. But you can search the grub docs, it could be there as well.
At this point I will try to use partition magic to use the rest of the disk as extended and create the *nix partitions in that remaining space.
If you change partition numbers linux will not start, and grub file has to be edited. Also fstab changes. Be sure you know how to use the rescue CD :-) -- it's doable, I instructed a friend on the phone and it was the first time for both of use - and he is the windows type ;-) -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
