Yes, my Canon S45 works just fine with digikam on SuSE 8.2. You didn't mention which version of SuSE you are running.

You might want to look around for updated versions of digikam if you are using an older version. I looked and the DX3500 is support in digikam under 8.2.

As for what cameras to buy, I would look for a camera that is supports as a USB mass-storage device if possible. That should allow a lot of options as to how you access it and you wouldn't be dependent on support by digikam.

I'm no expert on camera connections but I was not aware that a PTP connection would allow you to have direct access to the files on the camera. Have you tried digikam? That's what I use for my Canon Powershot S45 and I would assume it would work for your S50.
