Isn't it the other way around. Doesn't your ISPs SMTP server need to relay to your machine?
If he sets it up that way, every user that belongs to his ISP will be able to relay through his machine... not a good thing.
I don't use postfix, but I remember there is a setting in the main.cf file to make his ISP's SMTP setting the default SMTP. It is/was well documented in that file somewhere. Of course, his ISP may not take too kindly to other users, not on his account, to forward mail through them.
