Problem solved. Turns out that the KWiFiManager applet does something that causes this problem.
The problem disappeared after I stopped using KWiFiManager.

Interesting but I had the same problem without using KWiFi. I was using SETI which I had to change to a nice=19 in order to get SO or OO to work even close to reasonable. I suspect you haven't solved the problem, but that KWifi was using a lot of your CPU resources and you've simply cut down on the usage. The problem is most likely still there.

Greetings,
I have just installed StarOffice 6.0 and Openoffice 1.0 on my SuSE 8.2 system. Both are unusable in KDE - they basically take forever to even respond to mouse input. Almost like they hang, but not quite.
But they both run fine in Gnome.
All other applications run fine. What could cause this?
Thanks ahead,
