There is alot of different codecs for avi. You probably don't have the right decoding codec for that avi on the linux box. See if you can save the file to disk, and view it with xanim or mplayer, if not try to find out which codec it is, and see if you can get the linux port of it.
That explains everything. I tried to save the file to the disk, but it doesn't work either with mplayer, etc. I will try to find out which codec is it and see if I can fix it. Thanks

Are you using the SuSE flavor of MPlayer - off the CDs/DVD? Or have you recompiled MPlayer from source and added in the win32 codecs that are provided on the MPlayer home page? The SuSE version of MPlayer does NOT include all of the codecs - especially the win32 set.
the SuSE flavour of MPlayer includes a script that when run as su will search your ms-windows partition and copy across all codecs it finds into the MPlayer and sets up the codecs file to include them. the script name is: findw32codecs and file:/usr/share/doc/packages/MPlayer/README.SuSE tells you all about it... HTH still can't play those damn avis though... probably didn't have the right codec on my ms-windows partition... :(
