Solved
1) Put Sane-backends-1.0.12 in the trash-can
2) Download and install Sane-backends-1.0.10 (that worked in march
with SuSE-7.3) and Sane-frontends-1.0.10
3) Only problem: xsane: the tarball xsane did not work. I installed
the SuSE-8.1 xsane package and it took me 1/2h to convince YaST2 that
I did not want its outdated 1.0.8 Sane version but only xsane.
It works now.

Simple problem:
Canoscan LiDE is newly supported by Sane ==> can only install drivers with latest tarball from Sane.
Other option - upgrade to 8.2. Not ideal, possibly (but better than WinXP!).
My LiDE30 worked out of the box with 8.2 - just plugged it in and configured scanners through YaST. Detected as Lide30, driver installed and no problems thereafter :-)
