I've posted this before but if you don't mind I'll try again in the hope that someone will know an answer.I've googled and FAQ'd to no avail, so if any network gurus can help, I'd be grateful. I'm not sure where to look for error messages.
I'm currently in Qatar on business, working in a hospital that runs a Windows 2000 network. I can have access to this, have a username and password, and the IT dept set up the Windows XP Pro installation on my laptop to use the proxy server on port 8080. I can surf the web from Windows OK but can't access my pop3 mail. I dual boot the laptop with 8.2, though and would prefer to use that. I have set up the NIC (DHCP) and proxy settings in YaST with the same settings as in Windows, but I can't access the internet. I have also set up the proxy in the browser (tried konqueror and mozilla). Despite specifying that konqueror should ask for a username/password as needed, it doesn't. I just get an error message, saying connection refused, authentication error.
What am I missing here in terms of set up? The IT dept can't help me - they don't know either and aren't familiar with Linux.
Many thanks

I think that proxy server is configured to accept connections from MSIE only. Try to change browser id from konqueror settings so that it reports to be MSIE. For site/domain use your proxy's name or ip-address. This is only a wild guess, but it may help.
