Hi My assistant tried to install OpenOffice on a SuSE 7.3 machine. He downloaded the tarball and followed the install instructions. Once complete - with no obvious errors - he rebooted the machine. However, it would only go to runlevel 3. A 'startx' command gave a black screen and total system freeze. I decided, in what I thought was my wisdom, that since the machine had essentially only been used to create documents and browse the web, that there would be no harm in backing up the data and reinstalling. This I did, and everything came up nicely. However, I soon noticed some problems. If I try to invoke Yast2 from inside a shell, I get an X Server permission denied error. However, if I invoke Yast2 from the KDE menu, it starts up fine. Hmm. I decided to proceed with the OpenOffice install. Again, I untarred the tarball and ran the ./install script. This time it wouldn't install at all. Again, I got an X Server permission denied error. The error says 'You do not have permission to connect to this server'. I find this bizarre, since in both instances when I got the error, I was operating as the superuser. Also, I obviously *can* connect to the X Server, because I'm working in the KDE. Thoughts, help, suggestions appreciated as always.
