Perhaps you have xntp running.

xntp running WILL NOT cause the clock to stop. I have it running on 7 servers here plus my desktop, if it was causing a problem with the clock stopping a whole lot more people would be complaining. Alexy has a hardware or OS problem causing his machine to slow down to the point of freezing.
Good point - Carlos, you should open your box and run it open to observe what is happening (and to clean it out if very dusty). One of the fans - particularly the one on the processor - may be failing. Also, your power supply may be going. What are your machine specs? Is the power supply strong enough for all the devices?
xntp may not, but ntpdate may , sortof. setting the clock back just a few seconds may confuse the Xserver (it gets replies ``before'' it has sent them) upto the point of freezing (that is, the xserver gst confused by the replies and gets stuck in a loop. Symptoms include: - ntpdate running our of a cron job ;) - system time not monotonic (or similar wording) in your /var/log/XFree.0.log - X freezing, pegginng the CPU or simply the mouse no longer reacting the same problem can also cause less obvious errors (esp. if running motif linked apps) where pulldown menus no longer respond top mouse events (but can be controlled through the keyboard. Took us a long tiem to figure that one out ;) Though the above is clearly different from the symptoms described, which look like either a hardware issue or a runaway process. Try running sensors (preferably through gkrellm) to monitor CPU temp and fan speeds. Try running top to watch system load/memory usage use free to check memory Kind regards, -- Gerhard den Hollander Phone :+31-10.280.1515 ICT manager Direct:+31-10.280.1539 Jason Geosystems BV Fax :+31-10.280.1511 gdenhollander@jasongeo.com POBox 1573 visit us at http://www.jasongeo.com 3000 BN Rotterdam JASON.......#1 in Reservoir Characterization The Netherlands This e-mail and any attachment is/are intended solely for the named addressee(s) and may contain information that is confidential and privileged.
