They are not installed..... they are parameters to be handed to the kernel at boot time.
Edit: /boot/grub/menu.lst
and on your 'kernel' statement line, add:
apic acpi=off
(look at the failsafe entry in menu.lst for an example of the above.)

It looks like you need to turn OFF "acpi" and turn ON "apci". "apci" is needed for VMware to run and "acpi" if giving many people problems.
