I've tried your recommendation but it still does the same stuff. Issue is my application end up without any fonts as instead of letters in menus I see only squares.

Yeah, the "building font-metrics error messages". You will get this everytime you change fonts.
There is only 1 way to deal with it. (Other than deleting all the error fonts)
Let the "building font metrics" go thru 1 time, and ignore the errors. It will make a file called ~/.wine/cachedmetrics.:0.0
Now make this file mode 444 so it won't get changed, and add the following to the ~/.wine/config file
[fonts] "FontMetrics" = "/home/user/.wine/cachedmetrics.:0.0"
of course use your username :-)
Then it should skip the "building font-metrics" the next time wine starts.

You might try checking the perms of the font files. I had a simular issue in that all I saw was little squares where the text should have been. look in /usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/TTF and make sure the "world" has at least read capabilities, typically 644 perms. -- Ken Schneider unix user since 1989 linux user since 1994 SuSE user since 1998
