also if it would run the cron job even if the machine was locked

keyboard would the crom job still be ran and would it shut down and
reboot any info and ideas would be good
thanks in advance

this is to try to log in from the network. However, if the process
causing the lockup is in somewhat of a tight loop, even remote
connections are difficult and may even time out. IMHO, one solution
would possibly be a heartbeat monitor similar to those used on high
availability systems.
And, rather than reboot, maybe it should log off the GUI user or simply
kill the GUI, or possibly shift into another run level. In a high
availability system, the monitor simply causes a failover to the other
system.
