Situation: cdrom will mount cds, but will not mount cds I burned under windows. Apparently, Adaptec Directcd uses UFD as its fs. SuSE support says that this fs is not compiled in the kernel
That's not true, it is compiled as a module in the default kernel. Otherwise you wouldn't be able to mount DVDs.

Unfortunatley Sir, the file system for CDRW discs is usually UDF which is not compiled into the kernel by default. You will need to compile this module to enable you to read discs you have written using utilities such as Adaptec's CDRW program. Unfortunately the compilation of kernel modules or indeed the kernel itself is not covered by the free installation support.
So what do I do now? I know there's a UDF patch out there, but it
appears to be aimed at earlier kernels and seems to apply to burning.
Right now, I am primarily interested in reading UDF cds.
